Before the launch of Hyundai Exter in India, the Casper debuted first as the brand’s new micro SUV

    Hyundai Exter vs Hyundai Casper

The Hyundai Exter, the latest offering from the Korean marque, was launched earlier this year as the second offering in the Indian micro SUV segment. But before the Exter came into the market, Hyundai was working on another miniature SUV-like model, which was revealed in its home market in 2021 as the Hyundai Casper. The Exter and the Casper have many commonalities but are also very different in their details. Here is an in-depth comparison of both:

    Dimensions

If you think the Exter is a small car, then the Casper seems tiny in comparison. This Korean micro-SUV is smaller than the Exter in every dimension, and its length is closer to that of the Maruti S-Presso instead. According to some, the Casper is the first Hyundai of this size since the original Santro hatchback.

    Design

    Hyundai Exter Front
    Hyundai Exter Rear

The Hyundai Exter has a modern and muscular design. Its styling is dominated by the upright front profile with straight lines, H-shaped DRLs and tail lamps, and thick black strips at the rear. The big bumper, skid plates, door cladding and wheel arches, meanwhile, add a muscular appeal.

The Casper on the other hand, is not as boxy. The front gets a black strip that houses U-shaped DRLs, it gets a chrome mesh grille and circular headlights. The sides get cladding and wheel arches similar to the Exter and the rear profile has a simpler design with a black strip housing the tail lamps and the Hyundai logo. Also, the Casper’s rear door handles are mounted on the C-Pillar, next to the rear windows. It even gets the option of 17-inch wheels while the Exter only gets 15-inch wheels.

    Hyundai Casper Grille

Hyundai also made the distinction between the two variants of the Casper by offering one of them with a different front design. This variant comes with an all-black front grille and two chrome circles next to the headlights.

There is a similarity in the design language of the Exter and Casper with the dominant lighting elements being the same for the front and rear. It’s the H-shaped light signature for the India-spec model and the rounded lamps for the Korean-spec offering.

The engine options of both the micro SUVs are different. The Hyundai Exter offers a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine that also comes with a CNG kit. With the Exter, you get both a manual and an AMT option. The Hyundai Casper, in its home market, is offered with two petrol engines, but only a 4-speed automatic transmission.

    Features & Safety

    Hyundai Exter Cabin

The Exter features an 8-inch touchscreen information system, semi-digital driver’s display, automatic climate control, wireless phone charging, electric sunroof, dual-camera dashcam, 6 airbags (as standard), ABS and EBD, electronic stability control, and a tyre pressure monitoring system (TMPS).

    Hyundai Casper Cabin

In South Korea, the Casper gets a floating 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 4.2-inch MID, an electric sunroof, automatic climate control, cruise control, 7 airbags (as standard), a tyre pressure monitoring system and even ADAS features like lane keep assist, front and rear collision warning, high beam assist, auto emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

    Price & Rivals

    Hyundai Casper (Converted Price)

Rs 6 lakh to Rs 10.10 lakh

Rs 8.53 lakh to Rs 11.52 lakh

There is a clear price difference between the two Hyundai models. While the Casper is more compact than the Exter, it does offer more in terms of powertrain and features, which help it justify the price premium.

In India, the Exter is a direct rival to the Tata Punch. The Hyundai Casper, if it had come to Indian shores, would have rivalled the Tata Punch, Maruti Ignis and Maruti S-Presso but would be too pricey with that set of features and engines.
