Apple has announced a host of operating system updates, improvements and new features at the WWDC 2023 event. Included are three new features that will be particularly useful while driving which we have detailed for you below:
SharePlay In CarPlay
The fight to play your favourite music in the car will now end as Apple will integrate the SharePlay feature to the CarPlay, at least while using Apple Music. This will allow any passenger’s iPhone to take control of the music playback. This will not only eliminate the dependency on a single device, it also improves the user’s privacy as you will no longer have to hand your unlocked phone to someone to change the song.
When the driver starts the CarPlay, any passenger’s iPhone will suggest connecting to the CarPlay session. After joining the session, users can control the music and playback settings easily.

Offline Maps
On a road trip, we often travel through places with poor network connectivity, which impairs the operation of the Maps and pose a navigational challenge. To address this issue, Apple will offer an offline option to its maps app, allowing users to save the preferred route offline or even entire areas as selected by the user. This contains information such as hours and ratings on place cards, as well as getting turn-by-turn instructions for driving, walking, cycling, or taking public transport.
Real Time Charging Station Availability
As the number of electric vehicles on the road increases, information about the availability of charging stations on a long route is crucial. Apple Maps will soon have an integrated feature which not only gives real-time charging station availability on the go, but it will also suggest routes which are specifically suitable for an electric car.
When To Expect The New Features
Apple has not yet announced when exactly it will roll out these features, and we believe that some functionalities may be limited to some countries at first. Based on previous update rollouts, we expect the global iOS 17 update to be available sometime around late Q3 of calendar year 2023.
