Honda Brio was launched officially in Chennai today where buyers will have to shell out Rs 9000 more as Honda Brio price starts at Rs 4.04 lakh in Tamil Nadu. The extra 9 grand is due to 14.5 % VAT in Tamil Nadu compared to 12.5% VAT in New Delhi where Honda Brio price is Rs 3.95 lakh. Four variants of Honda Brio are made available in Tamil Nadu. The entry level Honda Brio is priced at Rs 4.04 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai), while the top end model of Honda Brio is Rs 5.20 lakh (ex-showroom Chennai).

Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice-President (Sales and Marketing) at Honda India said that Honda is targeting first time buyers along with those who already own a Honda vehicle. So far Honda India occupies top 20 per cent of the market share. According to him the company is reaching out to masses, with the launch of Honda Brio. On the backdrop of Honda Brio’s launch, Sen also shared some of Honda’s future plans. He said that the company is engaged in developing diesel engines with its research and development tem back in Japan. So it becomes quite suggestive that Honda India mulls to bring diesel cars in India.

The demand for petrol cars are diminishing whereas diesel cars are seeing a surge in demand like never before. Jnaneswar also said that the proposed diesel engine was being developed for a specific market like India as most of the markets worldwide prefer petrol cars. Sen’s statement almost confirms the advent of diesel cars in future although he declined to reveal when diesel variants will be rolled out in India. It has been in news for quite some time now that Honda City can see its diesel brethren, however not in near future. It can be hoped now that the Honda City facelift may adorn a diesel engine.
