Take a detailed look at the latest generation of Hyundai’s mid-size hatchback

The new Hyundai Grand i10 Nios mid-size hatchback has been launched in India with prices starting from Rs 4.99 lakh (ex-showroom India). It features a plethora of changes from the previous model in terms of exterior and interior design that makes it look sportier than before. We take a detailed look at the Grand i10 Nios below.

Exterior

The new front end features the latest iteration of the Hyundai’s cascading grille. It has a sportier look overall and hints at the increased width of the Nios. The Nios is 1680mm in width, that’s 20mm wider than the last Grand i10 hatchback.

The new projector fog lamps are placed beneath the air curtains, above the section that is designed to look like a sporty air vent. The Grand i10 Nios is the only car in the segment to offer projector fog lamps.

The grille design integrates the new boomerang shaped LED DRLs. It is coloured gloss black with most paint options. But if you opt for white or silver paint, the grille and the grille-surround is also finished in silver.

At the rear as well, the Nios is sportier than its predecessor with the more noticeable tailgate line that connects with the new tail light layout design as well. The Nios is still 1520mm tall, same as the previous Grand i10.

Like the Venue, it now has ‘Nios’ lettering in the centre under the Hyundai badge along with the Grand i10 badge on the top left. It also gets an extra strip of chrome at the bottom of the tailgate.

The rear bumper features indents that look like air vents with the sleek rear reflectors and a rear skid plate styled to look like a diffuser.

From the side profile, the Nios looks to have a more European hatchback kind of silhouette with the sloping windowline and rear end instead of the usual flat-back look.

The Nios measures 3805mm in length with a 2450mm long wheelbase which is 40mm and 25mm more, respectively, than the previous model. Despite the increase in dimensions, it is still 30-40kg lighter thanbefore.

It also features a floating roof design with the black cladding on the C-pillars. There is a textured G-i10 graphic on the C-pillars for an added bit of style. It still comes with roof rails as well.

The Nios gets projector headlamps but these are not LEDs like the Swift’s. Instead, the Nios gets a basic halogen setup.

Hyundai is offering the Grand i10 Nios with 15-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

The taillights of the Grand i10 Nios also miss out on LED elements. But it features an emergency stop signal in case of hard braking.

It is offered in six monotone colour options - Aqua Teal, Alpha Blue, Fiery Red, Polar White, Titan Grey and Typhoon Silver.

There are two dual-tone colour options as well which get a black roof.

The Grand i10 Nios also gets a shark fin antenna...

… and chrome door handles too.

Interior & Features

Hyundai has given the Grand i10 Nios a fresh new layout which is unlike any other of its current models. The standard offering is a dual-tone grey interior.

Surprisingly, it does not offer height-adjustable headrests on the front seats which feature an integrated design instead.

It features a wavy, hexagonal pattern on the passenger side dash section which can be found on the door pads and on the side of the central console tunnel as well.

This is the all-black interior available in the dual-tone variants. With the Aqua Teal you get Aqua Teal inerts around the air vents, air con controls and other dials, and on the seat stitching too. With the Polar White option, you get red inserts and seat stitching.

Most notable in this dashboard layout is the 8-inch touchscreen infotainment unit that sits above the central AC vents and integrated into the instrument cluster’s panel. It features both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility. The unit also has few buttons and dials flanking the touchscreen display as more tactile controls.

The Nios gets a new steering wheel similar to the one seen on the Kona Electric. However, this unit gets steering mounted controls on the left side of the wheel only.

These controls are for the audio system, hands-free calling, voice recognition and for some of the digital MID controls too.

The Grand i10 Nios’ instrument cluster houses a 5.3-inch digital multi-information display. On the left, it gets an analogue tachometer with a chequered-flag design and the right side has a ring to mimic an analogue dial but actually houses part of the MID. It displays the current speed, odometer, fuel indicator and a few other bits of information as well.

The fact that the outer ring of the tachometer extends to include the MID with the curved edge is a nice design touch as well.

Hyundai has also equipped the new Nios with a rear view monitor that uses the rear parking camera.

This is where the rear parking camera is fitted on the tailgate of the new Grand i10 Nios.

It gets automatic climate controls as well as front and rear defoggers.

Under the auto AC controls, the Nios gets a wireless charging pad in place of a storage bin.

It also has a power socket, USB port and an illuminated USB charger port.

The Grand i10 Nios also comes with the choice of a 5-speed Smart AMT with both the petrol and diesel engine offerings.

The side air vents on the dashboard are shaped like turbines, a theme which can also be found on the new Santro.

It also gets rear AC vents with vent controls and a rear power socket too. Hyundai is still the only carmaker to offer rear AC vents in this segment.

The rear seat does not feature split folding function or a fold out armrest, but it does get height-adjustable rear headrests. There is no headrest for the middle occupant of the rear bench though.

The Grand i10 Nios offers 260 litres of boot space.

Hyundai is offering the Grand i10 Nios with a pair of 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engines with a choice of both 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT. It is available in a total five variants which are priced between Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7.99 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The Nios takes on the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and Ford Figo.
