Joining the likes of Tesla Motors, Audi, BMW and Google, the homegrown automaker Mahindra too is working on driver-less cars and lately is experimenting with the likes of same. Mahindra’s electric car subsidiary Mahindra Reva is reportedly working on the driverless car and a source closer to development has said that the experiments have already begun and once we get the government approval we can start testing the vehicle on real life situations.
According to report published, Mahindra Reva has submitted proof of concepts for driverless cars in Singapore and UK. Over the development, Senior Executive said, "We have already begun experiments in our R&D facility in Bengaluru. Once we get approvals from the respective governments, we'll start testing these cars on road."
Also according to Senior Executive, after the starting trials and testing, company will need 3-4 years to develop a production ready model. The software which is needed to control car’s movement and other features is under development at the company's research and development facilities in India, in partnership with the group's technology arm, Tech Mahindra. While the trail runs will be done in UK and Singapore.
Mahindra Reva which has more than 2000 electric cars on Indian roads is also trying to crowdsource innovation needed for developing driverless cars.
Recently, Chetan Maini, founder of Reva, has resigned from the post of CEO of the electric car company that is owned by Mahindra. Chetan Maini founded Reva twenty years ago and now will be replaced by former Managing Director of Ford India, Mr Arvind Mathew.
