Mahindra launched the second-gen Thar on October 2 after a decade-long run by its predecessor. The first generation Thar saw a sale of around 60,000 units in its time. The excitement for the second-gen Thar is evident from the fact that it has crossed a quarter of that mark in bookings since it was launched on October 2. What’s more, it reached 9,000 bookings within just the first four days!
The reason for this could be Mahindra’s decision to make the new Thar a little more ‘family-friendly’. It is no longer the same barebones rugged off-roader, but also a daily commuter. Inside, the Thar gets a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, electric AC, front-facing rear seats, and cruise control, which add an element of comfort to the otherwise off-roader.
The new Thar also gets different roof options such as a hard top, soft top, and soft top convertible, which add to the appeal of the second-gen SUV. The availability of both petrol and diesel powertrains, along with the choice of an automatic gearbox for the first time, could be a factor for the appeal.
Launched just over two weeks ago, the new Thar is priced from Rs 9.80 lakh to Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom). It will face competition from the upcoming Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Bookings for the new Thar opened on the same day as its launch at a token amount of Rs 21,000. Due to the large number of bookings, the waiting period stretches all the way to 2021.
