The second-generation Mahindra Thar was launched at the start of October. It’s been a highly anticipated model since the previous gen was discontinued in 2019. Bookings opened on the same day as the prices were announced. The new Thar is offered with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, both with manual and automatic transmissions. It is priced between Rs 9.80 lakh and Rs 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Given its hype, long delivery times are to be expected for the new Thar. If you live in one of the following seven metro cities and are looking to buy the new Thar, here’s how long you’ll have to wait to collect yours:
City |
Thar Waiting Period |
Delhi |
2-3 months |
Mumbai |
4 months |
Chennai |
1.5-2 months |
Kolkata |
1.5-2 months |
Bengaluru |
1 month |
Pune |
2 months |
Hyderabad |
3-4 months |
*Waiting period may vary depending on the variant, engine and colour selected
Those in Bengaluru have the shortest waiting period while buyers in Mumbai and Hyderabad will have to wait up to four months. Those in Chennai and Kolkata will have to wait up to two months after placing the order. For residents of Delhi and Pune, it’s at least a two month wait, but Delhi buyers could have to wait as long as three months depending on the specification ordered. So if you live in any of these cities, except Bengaluru, and you place an order for the 2020 Thar now, you’re most likely to take delivery around early-2021.

Mahindra received more than 9,000 bookings for the new Thar in four days since its launch on October 2. The carmaker will begin deliveries from November 1 and you can expect the waiting period to grow longer as the days pass. Given that the new Thar is more practical than ever before with modern amenities like forward-facing seats, factory-fitted hard top roof, cruise control and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, it’s likely attracting a wider range of customers.
It has no direct rivals on sale at the moment. Its price is similar to compact SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Renault Duster and Nissan Kicks, all of which have their own waiting period, depending on the city and specification.
