The Maruti S-Cross, within a relatively short span of time, has witnessed many ups and downs in the Indian automotive market. It created quite a buzz during its launch, but that soon vanished when its prices were revealed. For those who purchased the car when the situation was dicey for Maruti, the automaker is offering a cash refund of INR 90,000. Applicable only to initial buyers of the S-Cross 1.6 (DDiS320), this move is being made in order to compensate the customers for the massive price slash done in January.

This cash refund is accompanied by a two year extended warranty, which is also offered on the 1.3 litre (DDiS200) variant. Prices of the car were dropped by Rs 40,000 to Rs 2.05 lakh, as the ‘premium crossover’ did not garner the attention of an average Indian buyer. Since then, the sales of the car have picked up and Maruti has managed to sell over 23,000 units of the S-Cross since its launch in August. Another factor which has helped its sales increase is the number of Nexa outlets. Initially limited to a few cities, Maruti now has more than 100 Nexa showrooms across the country.

"This is a just a token of gratitude for customers who showed their faith in us at the start and embraced our new initiatives. S-Cross is a significant milestone for Maruti Suzuki. Through this, we created the premium crossover category in India. We launched our new retail channel Nexa," a company spokesperson said. He added, "Without the support and confidence of these early adopters last year, we could never have achieved success in these new initiatives."

The DDiS 320 Alpha (top) variant of the S-Cross was priced at INR 13.74 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) before the amount was dropped to INR 11.69 lakh. This is a massive INR 2.05 lakh cut. On the other hand, the DDiS200 faced a price drop of INR 40,000 to 66,000. Watch the road test of the S-Cross, here

The S-Cross kicked off Maruti’s foray into the premium end of the market. Positioned as a premium crossover, it faces stiff competition from compact SUVs, such as the Renault Duster and the Hyundai Creta. We think the refund is a great gesture from Maruti Suzuki!
