Maruti September sales adds to its woes

Maruti India, country’s leading car manufacturer is out with its sales report for the month of September which has all reasons for company’s worry. It shows a negative growth of 20.8 % including the domestic sales and exports as compared to the corresponding period last year. Maruti India had sold 85,565 units in the month of September this year against 1,08,006 units in the last September. The September sales in the passenger vehicles segment records a drop in sales by 17.8% from last year’s 81,060 to 66,667 as compared to the corresponding time last year.

While the overall domestic sales suffered by 17.2% in the month of September from 95,148 to 78,816 this year; the exports have been significantly hit by 47.5% in comparison to 2010 September. Among the passenger vehicles the mini passenger segment comprising ofMaruti Alto, Maruti 800, Maruti A-Star and Maruti Wagon R and the mid-sized Maruti SX4 sedan segment are the two sectors recording major drop in sales at -23.5% and -90.0% respectively.

The company sales have drastically fallen due to the labour strike at the plant since August 29th, which has hit the production at the company. Despite the company’s effort to make the deliveries of the Maruti Swift model on time, the production constraints at the MSI has hit the sales of Maruti Swift by 2000 units in the month of September. The new Maruti Swift was launched in India on 17th August and has recorded over 1,00,000 bookings since then.
