India's largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki, 54.2% owned by Japan based Suzuki Motors, is all set to outgrow its parent Suzuki motors in research and development segment. Maruti Suzuki India recently left behind its parent in sales and the company is planning to keep this momentum in R&D segment also.

Maruti Suzuki India is establishing a R&D facility at Rohtak which after completion will be the only such efficient R&D center of Suzuki out side Japan. Company is planning to convert this facility into a self-sufficient and self reliant R&D center by the year 2012. Interestingly the company also has plans to launch a 100% made-in -India small car by 2012 which will be designed and engineered in this facility.

Besides this, company is already using India-made equipments in its newly launched cars like Maruti A-Star and Maruti Eeco. It is expected that the company will invest around Rs 1500 in its R&D segment over the period of 3-4 years, though there is no clarification from the company's side on this regard.

Maruti Suzuki India sold 9,67,581 vehicles in total last year and it accounts for around half the number of the cars sold in India in same period. Now as almost all major car manufacturers coming with their small cars in India including a new small car from Honda, Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo,  Toyota Etios and a small-size car from Nissan, makes company's self-sufficient R&D facility more important.
