The new Fortuner -- slated to launch in India in early 2017 -- has received a 5-star rating in the New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) for Latin countries’ crash test. This will assure Indian customers of the car’s safety.
Based on Toyota’s pickup truck, the Hilux, which also achieved a 5-star rating in a similar test, this SUV has already been launched in Indonesia. While being tested, the truck was equipped with dual front and driver knee airbags, along with ABS. So we believe the SUV will have similar safety features. The Hilux aced both adult and child occupant protection test by scoring five stars. Recently, the Honda BR-V also secured five stars in the NCAP for Southeast Asian countries’ crash test.
The Indian version is likely to come with two diesel engine options: 2.4 and 2.8 litres. The power figures of the mills are expected to be 160bhp/400Nm and 177bhp/450Nm, respectively. The transmission duties will be carried out by a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox. The figures of the Fortuner are impressive, but its competitors look prepared. Toyota’s offering will lock horns with the Chevrolet Trailblazer and the new Ford Endeavour. Both the cars (the 3.2-litre mill option in case of the Endeavour) produce 200 horses and stand ahead of Toyota’s SUV. Do check here for our detailed comparison.
Safety ratings have become all the more important these days. Recently, the global NCAP expressed concern over cars with a zero rating and pledged to remove them by 2020. In India, the government is already distressed over the increasing deaths due to car accidents. With such importance being given to vehicular safety, Toyota must be free from worry thanks to the Fortuner’s fantastic ratings.
