The new-gen WagonR is expected to be even more spacious than the current version

  • New WagonR will launch on 23 January 2019.

  • Based on a new platform, it is expected to be more spacious than before.

  • The images are possibly of a mid-spec variant - turn indicators are placed on the body, no parking sensors.

Update: The new Maruti Wagon R has been launched with a starting price of Rs 4.19 lakh and the top variant priced at Rs 5.69 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Read our first drive review of the new Maruti Wagon R here.

The new 2019 Maruti Suzuki WagonR is set to launch in India on 23 January 2019 and now we know exactly what it will look like. The first clear spy images of the WagonR are out and now we can say with certainty that its tallboy design has been carried forward. Neither the front nor the rear bear any similarity with the current version though.

Current WagonR and WagonR Vxi

Up front, the WagonR gets an upright face, like the existing version, but the headlamps are designed differently. The car in the pictures sports reflector-type halogen headlamps only, but it remains to be seen if Maruti Suzuki offers projector-type headlamps in some higher variant or not since this appears to be a low-spec variant. At present, the top-end WagonR Vxi variant, which was previously known as the Stingray, gets a halogen projector setup.

The images of the 2019 WagonR’s side profile reveals how Maruti Suzuki has tried to incorporate the floating roof design. There’s also chrome finish, both on the front grille as well as over the licence plate at the rear.

The tail lamps rise all the way up on the c-pillar. There’s a rear wash/wipe system and we expect it to pack a defogger as well. As of now, we’re unable to spot rear parking sensors on this model, which might mean that these are not standard. These are not standard on the new Hyundai Santro as well, but are available from the base variant onwards on the Datsun GO. Both the Santro and GO will be the WagonR rivals in India.

So, clearly, the car in the images doesn’t appear to be the top model, but it’s our best look at the 2019 WagonR till date. The new top-spec WagonR is likely get rear parking sensors, fog lamps and a touchscreen infotainment system as well. It doesn’t appear to be too different from the current WagonR in terms of size, but we expect Maruti Suzuki to eke out more room on the inside, as it might be based on the Heartect platform, which underpins other Maruti Suzuki cars like the Ignis and the Swift.

Expect features like ABS and dual front airbags to be standard. The WagonR is likely to be powered by the current 1.0-litre engine, paired with a manual as well as an AMT gearbox. We also expect a CNG option to be on offer too. The current WagonR is priced from Rs 4.15 lakh to Rs 5.39 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). We expect the new model to be priced in the same ballpark as well.
