Nissan Motor Company recalled one million vehicles globally, nearly 1,053,479 units, courtesy- Software glitches, that could deactivate the front co-passenger's airbag from deploying in an event of crash.
The system that detects the occupant before deployment – controlled by a software may falsely detect the absence – co-passenger seat as empty. This in-turn deactivates the airbag from deploying that might result in life threating casualty, according to a document filed with the NHTSA U.S.A (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
The affected vehicles, majorly from U.S, stated in the NHTSA document include 2013-2014 batch Nissan Pathfinder SUV, Altima sedan, Sentra and Leaf EV (electric vehicle). Other vehicles comprise of the 2013 Nissan NV 200 cargo van (Nissan Evalia in India), vehicles from Infinity brand like 2013 JX35, 2014 Q60 crossovers and 2014 Q50 sedan.
Out of the total number of vehicles recalled, 989,701 are from U.S, vehicles in Canada count to 60,000 and remaining are in other markets. The manufacturer recorded two accidents of non deployment of co-passenger airbag, although the company didn't relate the two issues. The upgradation of the software will start from mid-April and it will be free of cost. However, Nissan India didn't say anything about similar problem in the vehicles sold in the country.
