Nissan to take giant leap; plans doubling plant capacity

Nissan Motors recently announced that it will enhance the capacity of its plant at Orgadam near Chennai by next year. The Japanese auto major, Nissan Motors produces Nissan Micra hatchback and Nissan Sunny sedan. Since this plant is in alliance with Renault, sedan Renault Fluence and SUV Renault Koleos are also rolled out from the same facility. Nissan India now envisaged increasing the current capacity of 2 lakh cars per year to 4 lakh cars per year, just doubling the figure. Kiminobu Tokuyama, Managing Director at Nissan Motor India did not confirm the plan but said that Nissan is studying it right now.

Tokuyama said that the company plans to introduce a series of models from this plant. Nissan Motors invested Rs 4,500 crore spread over a period of seven years for this facility. The Orgadam plant recently achieved a milestone by producing 1 lakh petrol and diesel engines in a record period of 15 months. In July 2010, Nissan India unveiled its first hatchback Micra manufactured from this facility which is in existence since March 2010. Nissan came in news recently with the launch of its sedan Nissan Sunny starting at Rs 5.78 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Dinesh Jain, CEO, Hover Automotive who handles Marketing and Distributor for Nissan vehicles in India, also confirmed about the arrival of Nissan Sunny diesel in due course.

Jain also said that the company has set a target of retailing 40,000 units this fiscal and plans to take dealership network to 60 from 45 by March 2012. Adding to the knowledge pool he said from this target we will take it to 100 dealers by March 2013, covering 80% of country. Nissan also sells premium luxury sedan Nissan Teana and SUV Nissan X-Trail. However, both the cars are brought and sold as Completely Built Units.
