With the launch of Nissan Terrano inching closer, we got an opportunity to speak to Mr Chikuya Takada and learn more from him about this new upcoming SUV. The platform for this SUV is shared with the already selling Renault Duster, we ask him about the new SUVs plan and what possibly lies in the future.
Q1) Why is it such a phased-launched rather than just launch it?
Ans) It is marketing tactics, like if we have a new smartphone launch, there is just a hike in talks about the product and gone. This means we do not get to share the different aspects of the vehicle, which will be overshadowed.
Q2) In terms of looks, you have managed to make it different how about the mechanicals?
Ans) All I can say is Renault’s powertrain is good, and you will find the difference when you drive the Terrano. Also, the fact that we have a fairly limited time in hand so it is difficult for us to do several changes.
Q3) Renault and Nissan have been badge sharing. What do you think are the pros and cons of it?
Ans) This is a good question and I appreciate it. Renault has had good manufacturing techniques and Nissan has a strong technology background and SUV culture, like the Qashqai has been a hit in European market. The advantage is we can take the best things from each other. The disadvantage is like we cannot have two dealers in the same area maybe that’s the only thing the company will want to differentiate.
Q4) The Duster’s numbers have dropped since the Ecosport has come in, then what will the Terrano get if it will be more expensive?
Ans) We Nissan are getting a product that the customer will not care about competition. We will get a strong product and our customers will be well educated and well informed who wants a good SUV for himself that’s muscular and aggressive. This is our target audience.
Q5) Will there be a 4WD version? Have you sourced any supplier for it?
Ans) That will be a great opportunity, but I cannot reveal any thing at this time. It is a difficult task for us to answer it at the moment.
Q6) Does Renault design centre in Mumbai, are also working for Nissan?
Ans) The Terrano has been designed by our global designers and they finalise other terms of the vehicle including the quality, finish and each and every panel. The Mumbai based team though is involved in making the Datsun Go, as the idea was to have a complete Indian design.
