Renault to produce Made-in-India ‘Duster’

Renault plans to manufacture its SUV Duster at its Orgadam plant, near Chennai, the SUV will be launched in FY2012. The French car maker wants a complete Made-in-India tag for Renault Duster priced at an expected starting range of Rs 8 lakh. Renault will produce right hand drive model of the Duster SUV and will export it to all RHD markets including UK, under the badge of - Dacia.

Talking about Renault Duster specifications, a 1.5-litre dCi engine which produces 105 bhp of power and 240 Nm of torque will be placed in the SUV. A 1.6-liter petrol engine will also be offered with the Duster, producing 105 bhp power and 148 Nm of torque. Renault will offer the Duster in both 4×2 and 4×4 options.

After Renault Fluence and recently unveiled Renault Koleos, this would be the third car by French car manufacturer. However Renault’s new hatchback-Renault Modus is also doing rounds and is expected to hit Indian roads by the end of this year. Renault foresees immense opportunities in India which is Asia’s third biggest automobile market and the second fastest growing automobile market after China. South Africa could be the next export destination after UK. Ashish Sinharoy, Vice-President (Communications & corporate affairs) at Renault India has reportedly said that the company will definitely look at any opportunity for exporting made-in-India cars to its global network. After accomplishing this goal, Renault will turn out to be the first foreign carmaker in India that exports its SUVs from the country.
