The Indian automotive market is often referred to as the toughest in the world, for what matters more here – more than even the quality of the car – is the connection of the brand with the consumers. Indians demand a lot from their 4-wheel marvels and, if delivered, they don't shy away from showing their love and appreciation. The latest example is of the recently launched Vitara Brezza, which has already crossed 2,600 bookings in 24 hours. We’ve tried to list out the most sought-after cars in the Indian market for you. However, we realize that judging all cars using the same yardstick is not fair. So, here are the segment-wise leaders, based on the number of units sold in India, in the month of February.

    A & B1 Segments

Usually clubbed into one, this is considered to be the most important segment in the Indian car market and has the highest customer base. In a way, it is the backbone of Indian automotive sector. For a really long time now, this space has been ruled by the Alto, which is the largest -selling car in India. Here are the segment leaders in the month of February.

    B2 Segment Hatchbacks

B2, also known as the B+ segment in India, occupies the space of the mid and premium hatchbacks. This segment too has Maruti written all over it, but faces some competition from Hyundai. A surprise arrival in this segment is Mahindra with the KUV100. Here is the list of 5 top-selling cars in the B2 segment in February.

    C1 & C2 Segment Sedans

This segment can also be called the second-car segment. Usually, this is the place where you will find your second automobile. It holds both sub-four meter and premium sedans. Once again, for the third time in a row, Maruti dominated this arena with the Dzire and the Ciaz. Honda and Hyundai sold almost identical units of the City, the Xcent and the Amaze. Here are the headline-makers in this segment.

    D Segment Sedans

This space is occupied by sedans that are both powerful and luxurious. This is what most of the business class drives. Toyota has a good hold over this segment with the Corolla Altis. While the Japanese automaker sold almost 500 units in February, the Czech automobile manufacturer, Skoda, finished second with 239 units of Octavia. Here are the top sedans of the D segment.

    Utility Vehicles

Recently, during the launch of the Brezza, a statement was uttered: “unchi is the new lambi (tall is the new long)”. This certainly stands true for the Indian car owners. Buyers are shifting their focus from long and elegant sedans to tall and masculine SUVs. This is reflected in the sales of SUVs like the Creta. But once again, Maruti dominates with its wide range of utility vehicles. Here are the top utility vehicles of February.

If one considers the above data, it is evident why Maruti is the largest carmaker of the country. Out of the five broad segments, Maruti rules four and, with the Vitara Brezza joining the fray, these numbers are only going to escalate further.
