Tatas had decided to launch its small car project Nano from Singur in West Bengal. But the same could not take off from Singur. Recently Tatas have stated that the same land which was allocated to Tata Motors for the project of Tata Nano still belongs to the company . The company further stated that the same land in Singur can be used for some other project. Mukul Rohatgi, senior advocate, appearing for Tata Motors commented that Tata Motors has got lease and they are yet there. He also said that they invested crores of rupees and have got their infrastructure at that place (Singur). The land could be used for some other activity by the company, added the advocate. The advocate has given all these logics to the Bench that comprises Justice A K Patnaik and Justice R V Raveendran. He further added that even after possessing a lease deed for ninety years in company’s favour for 646 acres of land, no activity took place on the land for which Tata Motors was paying the rent of Rs one crore each year.
The senior advocate for Tata Motors said that they have already lost a sum of Rs 500 crores. The company has given this submission after the opposition of acquisition of fertile agricultural multi crop land by those who claim return of the land to the West Bengal Government who in turn can hand over it to the farmers. The counsel which is representing West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation, stated that the title of that land was yet there with the Corporation. If the company does not make any use of it, the land can definitely be taken back from Tata Motors. The Bench involved in this case wanted the final hearing in the Tata Motors’ case to be fixed somewhere during March in the coming year. But the Bench had to change this thought as it observed that West Bengal can possibly go through the assembly elections by the month of May.
