Tata Motors is all set to join Maruti Suzuki in the million-unit club this year. This will be one more milestone for TM which is one of India’s oldest vehicle makers and whose product line includes everything from  world’s cheapest car to expensive ones like Jaguar and Land Rover etc.

Tata Motors’ joining in a select club can be soon followed by another big domestic vehicle maker, Mahindra and Mahindra. M&M’s product line ranges from sports utility vehicles to tractors. The company also sold around three lakh passenger vehicles and another 1.7 lakh tractors last year.

Tata Motors is planning to raise the production of Nano up to 25,000 units a month. This is expected to be done by the first quarter of the year 2011. Nano has already shown good results when it comes to its sales. The recent Nano sales have already vaulted the first position for the company and dragged Hyundai Motor India to the second position in the car market in terms of volumes in June. Experts also believe the soon Nano will replace Suzuki Alto as the largest-selling car in the country.

Including the exports, Tata Motors had sold around 2.65-lakh passenger vehicles and the total passenger vehicle tally rose to more than 4.5 lakh units with JLR. A Tata Motors spokesman also said that the capacity at the Sanand plant is 2,50,000 units and it will be ramped up fast.

Ernst and Young predicts in a study for Automotive Components Manufacturers’ Association,  that India’s passenger vehicle sales will reach 8-10 million by 2020. The current figure stands at around two million. The increase would make India the third-largest market after China and US.
