If the latest proposal of the state government of Karnataka comes true, the cheapest and most popular car of India, Tata Nano, will soon replace the auto-rickshaws in the city of Bangalore.
Mr R Ashoka, transport minister of the state said on Saturday that the government is mulling over the option of purchasing more than 10,000 units of Tata Nano for renting them out to the auto- rickshaw drivers in Bangalore. He also said that the profit from these new car-come-auto-rickshaws will be shared in the 40:60 ratio between drivers and the government, respectively. According to him, this large number of Tata Nano could be purchased by investing money from government's own resources or it may be done gradually through finance.
The transport minister further added that there is not much difference in the cost of an autorickshaw and a Nano. The ministry is continuously receiving complaints about auto-drivers. The number of auto-drivers is very less as compared to the population in one of the fastest growing city of the state.
The above mentioned proposal has been named as the Akrama-Sakrama scheme, by which government is aiming to help-out 15 lakh families in the state and in return will generate a revenue of Rs 15,000-crore for the exchequer. For the effective implementation of this scheme, the state government will make sure that a single-window system will be set up at local units. Mr Ashoka concluded that the recent proposal (if implemented) will help improve the financial position of the urban local bodies.
