What stopped Honda Brio and Hyundai Eon from making history?

Though Honda Brio and Hyundai Eon are not quite the biggest misses of the year, the two cars just did not deliver results to meet the consumers’ and manufacturers expectations alike. Both the hatchbacks are developed as cheapest petrol cars from the respective car manufacturers with a specific objective in mind. While the escalating petrol prices are the major culprit blamed for, that is not the sole reason why the cars had to settle for a lukewarm success in the industry. Let’s check out how far they managed to woo the consumers in each case. After a long wait, the Japanese car manufacturer introduced the cheapest car from their table with the hope to surpass the success of any Honda car in the country with a 1.2L 88 Bhp petrol motor churning out 109 Nm of torque.

Though the mileage was also decent at 18.5 kmpl, the Honda Brio just refused to live up to the expectations. Honda India has taken even the slightest point into account and timed the launch so well hoping the car to take off straight away to capitalize on the festive season. But, that wasn’t how it was. The festival season itself for some reason did not lift the sales as it usually does during this part of the year. The Honda Brio sales stood at 171 units in September, which is basically the month of its launch, then moved up to 1221 units in October and slumped to 666 units in November.  While the auto major was only beginning to see a small ray of hope, the Thailand floods have left them with absolutely no reason to hold a candle for its success as Honda Brio production was brought to an abrupt halt.

Hyundai India which developed the small car EON with the sole intention to topple Maruti Alto is just left to pick up the pieces of its broken pride. The Hyundai EON failed to garner atleast one-third of the Maruti Alto sales with 7,200 units in the month of October when the Maruti Alto was conveniently making over 20,000 unit sales a month. Even the Hyundai’s Fluidic design and the 814 cc petrol engine with 56 Bhp and 76 Nm peak power and torque figures did not do much to boost the sales. The stylish lustrous exteriors felt pale in comparison to the unparalleled sales of Maruti Alto. So, it still remains a mystery even to the car manufacturers as to what makes a car an outright hit while some just do not live up to their expectations despite extreme efforts.
