An year and a half after Mahindra Xylo hit the Indian roads, the nation's most renowned and reliable utility vehicle maker Mahindra & Mahindra launched another one that wooed people in almost no time. Guess it was the response M&M received for Mahindra Xylo that prompted them to speed up the process of giving shape to their most industrious project yet, i.e. Mahindra XUV500. And their ambition of making an SUV that could give the segment leaders a run for their money shaped into a very successful car indeed. The company's polished attempts to create hype around their much cherished XUV500 not only created a rather rare customer mania, but catapulted the SUV into the limelight upon its launch. And soon the mania translated into very impressive figures with a reported sale of 35,000 units within an year.

Okay, so all that did set M&M's cash registers ringing and a huge number of people willingly waiting to buy the car. But where does Mahindra and Mahindra plan to go from here? Their growth has been stable and have come a long way from their initial reputation as the makers of asperous and dependable cars, which never really scored much for their looks and design. Then Mahindra Scorpio happened, and there was no looking back after that. While the Scorpio at its time was the closest Indians could get to a genuine SUV, Xylo brought together the adequacy of a UV with the comfort of a sedan.

And now M & M plans to take the desirability of the XUV500 a notch up with several of its variants in the pipe. The variants that they are apparently working on right now, include a petrol version, an automatic version, a cheaper version, a spruced-up version, and also a global MPV version. That news is definitely exciting, but it remains to be seen if the new versions will be able to deliver an encore of their original variant's performance. Or will the XUV500 get better? All we can do is wait for it.
