In order to expand the new BMW 3-Series (F30) range in the U.S., a new ActiveHybrid 3 model has launched and the model will be on sales from this fall. The first hybrid version of the 3-Series is of $49,300 ( INR 27.50 lakhs) which does not include destination and handling fee of $895 ( INR 50,000).
ActiveHybrid 3's powertrain combines the 335i's TwinPower Turbo 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder and 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with an electric motor powered by a high-voltage battery.
The engine gives an output of 300bhp but when the 335i engine is combined with an electric motor, its output increases to 335bhp with the maximum torque of 450Nm.
According to BMW the electric motor can drive the ActiveHybrid 3 by itself for speeds up to 70 kmph and for a distance up to four kilometers. The vehicle is capable to accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 4.8 seconds along with a top speed of 250kmph when fitted with performance tires. The 335i sedan with the automatic transmission completes 0 to 100 kmph in 5.1 seconds.
The fuel economy figures of the U.S. model have yet not been disclosed. BMW acclaims that the vehicle has an average fuel consumption of 6.4 litres at every 100 kms.
The exterior of the hybrid variant can be identified by the “ActiveHybrid 3” lettering on its C-pillars, exclusive 18-inch Streamline alloy wheels and matt chrome exhaust tailpipes at the rear end. Looking at the interior cabin of the car one can easily see a selection of bespoke touches such as the “ActiveHybrid 3”
lettering on the front door sills and on the gear lever knob in the center console, and the rev counter area that includes graphics detailing the electric motor’s boost function as well as the energy flow and recuperation display of the car. In U.S., BMW’s ActiveHybrid 3 can also be ordered with the Sport, Modern or Luxury lines along with the M sport line model of the vehicle.
