Indian government has recently said, it is planning to set up a national Automotive Board (NAB) under the Heavy Industry Department to platform the new initiatives taken for the growth of the automobile sector. National Automotive Board will be a self-governing body consisting of technical and domain professionals who will take up and synergize the ongoing plans and the ones in the pipeline from the government of India aimed towards the growth of Automobile sector.

The main responsibilities of board comprises of administrating, regulating and synergizing the functioning of testing facilities, aid collaborative research and development functions and to issue testing and homologation certificates based on test reports conducted by the testing centers. The board will act as a coordinate authority between all sections and bodies related to the auto industry and will set out guidelines on issues like recalls of vehicles that have not been properly monitored so far.

NAB needs to be placed above National Automotive testing and R&D infrastructure Project (NATRiP) in the authority chain as these centers are commissioned and NATRiP Implementation Society (NATIS) is bottled. NATIS is at the top and the zenith body for execution of NATRiP. The ministry also appoints consultants to read research and suggest the plan of action for the revival of sick industries and loss making CPSEs as and when required.  The example being HML (Hindustan Machine Tools Ltd), Hindustan Machine Tools Bearings and Hindustan Cables where the government hired consultants to develop a revival plan.
