Is XA-Alpha Maruti's Compact SUV project?

Recently there have been grapevines spreading about a compact SUV from Maruti which is called as XA-Alpha. However, Maruti XA-Alpha being a compact SUV is only a guess. The newest development on this front is the news of Maruti trying to pace up the entire XA-Alpha project. This move of Maruti Suzuki India has been guided by the nearing launch of other compact SUV cars in India like Ford EcoSport crossover and Renault Duster SUV. The utility vehicles have been bagging huge volumes in the Indian sub-continent and Maruti wants to cash on this opportunity as fast as it can.

The speculated compact SUV was put on display during the Auto Expo 2012 held in New Delhi and had also received good response from the audience. XA-Alpha is perfectly capable of seating five adults comfortably. The length of the car is expected to be less than 4 m with the expected price under Rs. 10 lakh. Maruti Suzuki India’s CEO, Shinzo Nakanishi had recently consulted the officials of Suzuki, Japan to facilitate the decision of building the aforementioned compact SUV.

If Suzuki replies in affirmative for this SUV, Maruti Suzuki is sure to get into the production of this compact SUV as quickly as it can. The compact Maruti SUV would be rolled out in both the petrol and diesel variants.  Maruti Suzuki is very crucial for Suzuki, Japan as it contributes to around 40 percent of sales at global level. It is likely that Suzuki waves the green flag on this petition of Maruti so that it can mark its entry in the utility market before other players claim their dominance.
