Japanese carmaker Nissan had an exciting 2014 Auto Expo, where it unveiled an array of vehicles including new Sunny, updated Evalia, GT-R GT500 and Friend-Me concept. Moreover, Nissan's low cost brand Datsun also displayed the Go hatchback, Go+ MPV and Redi-Go concept. Now, the company aims to increase its market share to 10 per cent from current 1.1 per cent over the next 3-4 years. In a bid to achieve its ambitious plans for the Indian market, Nissan is eyeing the growing sub-4 metre segment, where it could introduce a compact sedan and SUV.
According to a report published on Business standard, Nissan has plans to focus on the sub-4 metre segment and will introduce vehicles accordingly. The company hasn't revealed much about the products to come India, however we expect the Micra platform could be used to develop a compact sedan and an SUV.
Speaking to BS, Toru Hasegawa, corporate vice-president (India, Africa and West Asia), said, “Last year, sales of hatchbacks and mid-sized sedans declined 10 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively, in India. The segments seeing growth are light sports utility vehicles and sub-four-metre sedans and we will focus on these segments. By 2016-17, we want to be a major force in the Indian market.”
It is a well known fact that the Indian auto industry is going through its worst period. Despite being a slump in the market, the compact SUV and compact sedan segments have continuously witnessing a positive growth.
