At the Auto Expo 2012, New Delhi, Tata Motors displayed a very remarkable concept of Tata Aria AT that would be accompanied with six automatic transmission. The G85 six speed automatic gearbox will not be limited to the upcoming Tata Aria, but is also expected to be installed in the new Tata Safari Strome SUV. The new G85 six speed automatic gearbox that was showcased by Tata on Tata Aria AT concept could easily handle maximum torque of up to 450 Nm, which is a figure that none of the Tata’s sport utility vehicles could handle at present.
Therefore, one thing is for sure that there would be no problem of handling torque with G85 gearbox. This automatic gearbox will also come with some more extra features, such as tiptronic mode, which allows the driver to shift gears manually although devoid of the clutch. Furthermore, this new gearbox also has the ability to handle three modes, comfort, sport mode for sporty functions to amplify driving performance along with pleasure and economy mode. According to Tata Motors, the G85 six speed automatic gearbox comes with 6 ratios and one or two over drive gears totally depending on the application. The first to fourth gears comprise of triple synchronizer whereas the fifth, sixth along with reverse gears have double synchronizer.
The new G85 six speed automatic gearbox has been developed by DANA, who is a transmission maker for Tata Motors. Dana also manufactured drive shafts for Tata world truck and other commercial vehicles of Tata. Therefore, Tata Motors has openly showcased the six speed automatic transmission, which could be installed in its SUV and other crossover range in near future. This gearbox is expected to be seen in Tata Safari Storme, Tata Xenon and Tata Aria in near future.
