Most fuel efficient cars in India

Fuel efficiency is one of the most important factors in an Indian buyer’s decision-making process, as it directly impacts the long-term cost of ownership. Whether it is for daily commutes or long road trips, a fuel-efficient car offers cost savings, especially when the fuel costs are soaring. If you're in the market for a car that offers great fuel economy, here are the most fuel-efficient mass-market vehicles that stand out for their impressive claimed mileage.

Maruti Grand Vitara / Toyota Hyryder

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 27.97 kmpl (Hybrid)

    Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder
    Maruti Grand Vitara

The first SUVs on this list are the Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder, which share the same platform and are the only compact SUVs to offer a hybrid powertrain. Both use a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a hybrid system, delivering a combined output of 116 PS and 141 Nm. It returns an impressive claimed 27.97 kmpl, courtesy of their ability to drive in pure EV power as long as there is enough charge in the battery pack.

Besides the hybrid setup, they are also available with a regular 1.5-litre petrol engine, which can be had with an optional all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, and there is a CNG option as well. Prices for the Grand Vitara range from Rs 11.42 lakh to Rs 20.68 lakh, while the Hyryder is priced between Rs 11.34 lakh and Rs 19.99 lakh.

    Honda City Hybrid

    Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 26.5 kmpl

    Honda City Hybrid

Another hybrid on the list, and the only compact sedan here, is the Honda City Hybrid, which claims a fuel efficiency of 26.5 kmpl. Like the Grand Vitara and Hyryder, it uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with a hybrid system, offering a combined output of 126 PS and 253 Nm. It comes with an e-CVT gearbox and is available in a single variant, priced at Rs 20.75 lakh.

    Maruti Celerio

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 26 kmpl (AMT), 24.97 kmpl to 25.24 kmpl (MT)

    Maruti Celerio

Even though the Maruti Celerio is a non-hybrid car, its claimed fuel efficiency figures can give the hybrid cars a run for their money. It comes with a 1-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, which produces 67 PS and 89 Nm, and is mated either with a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). The Celerio ranges between Rs 5.64 lakh and Rs 7.37 lakh.

    Maruti Swift

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 25.75 kmpl (AMT), 24.80 kmpl (MT)

    Maruti Swift

The Maruti Swift is powered by a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine making 82 PS and 112 Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. It also gets a CNG option for those seeking better fuel efficiency. Despite being one of Maruti’s larger hatchbacks, the 3-cylinder engine helps it remain more economical than some smaller models. Prices for the Swift range from Rs 6.49 lakh to Rs 9.64 lakh.

    Maruti Dzire

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 25.71 kmpl (AMT), 24.79 kmpl (MT)

    Maruti Dzire

The Maruti Dzire, one of the brand’s recently updated models, uses the same 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine and gearbox options as the Swift. However, it is slightly less fuel-efficient due to the added weight from its larger sedan body. The Maruti Dzire’s prices range from Rs 6.84 lakh to Rs 10.19 lakh.

    Maruti S-Presso

The Maruti S-Presso also features an identical engine as the Celerio, but it is slightly less frugal with 0.70 kmpl less with the AMT and almost 0.50 kmpl lesser with the manual option. It also gets the same manual and automatic options, and prices of the S-Presso range from Rs 4.26 lakh to Rs 6.12 lakh.

    Maruti Wagon R

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 25.19 kmpl (1-litre Petrol AMT), 24.35 kmpl (1-litre Petrol MT)

24.46 kmpl (1.2-litre Petrol AMT), 23.56 kmpl (1.2-litre Petrol MT)

    Maruti Wagon R

Following the Maruti Celerio, S-Presso and Swift is the Maruti Wagon R, which also offers a high fuel efficiency. It uses the same 1-litre engine as the Celerio but offers slightly more performance at 86 PS and 91 Nm, though with a small drop in fuel economy.

In higher variants, the Wagon R is also available with a 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 91 PS and 114 Nm, paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT. Prices for the Wagon R range from Rs 5.79 lakh to Rs 7.62 lakh.

    Maruti Alto K10

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 24.90 kmpl (AMT), 24.39 kmpl (MT)

    Maruti Alto K10

The Maruti Alto is one of the brand’s most affordable hatchbacks, offering a claimed fuel efficiency of nearly 25 kmpl. It is powered by a 1.0-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 69 PS and 91 Nm, and is paired with the same gearbox options as the other entry-level Maruti models in this list. The Maruti Alto also comes with a CNG option, making it the most affordable car in India to offer a factory-fitted CNG kit. It is priced between Rs 4.23 lakh and Rs 6.21 lakh.

    Hyundai Venue

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 24.20 kmpl (Diesel MT)

    Hyundai Venue

The Hyundai Venue is the most affordable mass-market car to offer great fuel efficiency with a diesel engine. It uses a 1.5-litre diesel unit producing 116 PS and 250 Nm, paired only with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The Venue is also available with an 83 PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 120 PS 1-litre turbo-petrol engine. Its prices range between Rs 7.94 lakh and Rs 13.62 lakh.

    Kia Sonet

Claimed Fuel Efficiency: 24.10 kmpl (Diesel MT), 19 kmpl (Diesel AT)

    Kia Sonet

The Kia Sonet shares its diesel engine with the Hyundai Venue but offers an automatic option for it as well. However, the diesel-automatic setup has a much lower claimed fuel efficiency than the manual, which itself delivers slightly lesser mileage than the Venue’s diesel manual. Other engine options are similar, and prices for the Sonet range from Rs 8.10 lakh to Rs 15.74 lakh.
