Auto giant Tata Motors has re-equipped the top deck of its passenger vehicle business as a part of company’s big plan to tap in-house talent and also for increasing the sales. R Ramakrishnan, vice-president (sales & marketing) of commercial vehicle division will now act as the VP (commercial) passenger cars. He will have to report to PM Telang who is the MD of the company’s India operations. Niraj Srivastava is the new head for the car product group and he will be reporting to Mr Ramakrishnan. S Krishnan, senior VP for passenger car business in India  will now take care of the international business operations. Nitin Seth, senior GM and the erstwhile head of the car product group, has been given some  cross-company strategic initiatives.

During the recent past, the passenger car business came under pressure. With the production at the Sanand plant at Gujarat, the sales of Tata Motors’ Nano have stabilized. But as far as the other products like Indica, Indigo, Sumo and Safari in passenger vehicle business are concerned, these products are going through a certain pressure. The position of the president in the passenger car business was never filled up after the exit of Rajiv Dube. His role was divided into two in which Girish Wagh took charge of production and Mr Krishnan became the marketing-in-charge for passenger cars.

According to the sources, these new changes have taken place in Tata Motors with the aim of recharging the passenger vehicle business and to give opportunities to the young talents. The senior officials in the commercial vehicles business stated that these new changes will not affect the truck sales that have stabilised over the last few months. A Mumbai-based Tata Motors truck dealer said that they see a lot of truck purchases with the Euro III emission norms coming into place from October. The passenger car business is soon going to launch Aria in September. This is a crossover vehicle. For the period of April-July, the sales of commercial vehicles in the domestic market were 1.32 lakh units with a growth of 32%. On the other hand Tata Motors passenger vehicles stood at 100,100 units with  a 59% increase.
